SNZ Awards & HOF Dinner30/11/2011

SQUASH NZ COACHING AWARDS 2011
The three categories of awards were New Coach, Club and School Coach and District Performance Coach. The nominees are selected by the Squash NZ Coaching Advisory Panel and the awards were presented by National Coaching Director Dave Clarke.

The New Coach Award was won by Nirelle McDonald (Northland) who recently became involved in the game again through the Squash in Schools Program in Kaitaia which saw 60 children introduced to the game. She then completed 4 of the Squash NZ Coach Development Framework modules and visibly applied these techniques to the program. Upon completion she raised funding for equipment and to run another program introducing a further 122 children to squash. She currently runs 4 sessions a week at the club and has converted 60 of those school children into club members as well as helping assistant coaches in the delivery of the junior programs. This is a truly inspiring effort by Nirelle who is a worthy recipient of the award.

The Club and School Coach of the Year was Nick Wiffen (Wellington/Nelson) who is based at Motueka Squash Club. He runs junior night coaching sessions for Secondary Schools children as well as running an advanced squad which has seen players nationally ranked. He also coached 3 teams in the SI Secondary Schools Champs and 6 teams at the Regional Champs. In his spare time he raised money for the juniors and is also the President of the club. One of his young charges was quoted Nick feels like a friend to me rather than just a coach, he set aside several hours of his private time to coach or simply feed my hunger for improvement.

The District Performance Award for 2011 went to Mark Waldin (Auckland) who has had an incredibly busy year. He has coached the Auckland Teams to inter District and National success with both boys and girls teams winning the National Championship. He worked with several Squash NZ National Squad members in 2011 and is the personal coach to Abbie Palmer who recently was part of the Squash NZ World Junior Girls Team. He is on the Squash Auckland Coaching Panel and is a qualified Squash NZ coach facilitator who has delivered a multitude of workshops up skilling other coaches this year.

Squash NZ National Coaching Director Dave Clarke said "the standard of nominations was extremely high this year with nominations up by 100% from the previous year. The Coaching panel would like to acknowledge not just the work of the coaches above but of all coaches who are contributing their time and effort to Squash in New Zealand. Thank you all for your contributions and keep up the good work."

SQUASH NZ CLUB OF THE YEAR 2011
Manurewa Squash Club were selected as the Squash NZ Club of the Year after a year of growth and new initiatives for the South Auckland club. The introduction of the voluntary position of Membership Administrator’ to build quality relationships within the club and community with the goal of growing and developing the game of squash in Manurewa has had a great impact for the club. Initiatives around membership types, volunteer training and recognition, coach development, women’s squash programmes and refurbishments have all helped in the club’s 65% increase in membership in the past year. With more refurbishments planned, online booking currently being installed and more membership programmes planned, the club is set to continue their growth next season. Ernie Dumper, president of Manurewa Squash Club said that without the support of Squash Auckland, the club could not have achieved what they did.

SQUASH NZ PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR
Don Cotter was the 2011 recipient of the Squash NZ Personality of the Year plate for his contribution to the history of squash through the continued development of the Squash NZ Hall of Fame and through the history of squash book Long and Short which Don drove the development of. One year ago Don was initiated as a life member of Squash NZ and this year he said he was once more blown away to receive this award, stating in typical Don-fashion, that the award should not be given to him, but to the whole committee of the Squash NZ Hall of Fame.

SQUASH NZ CHAIRMAN’S AWARD
Each year, the Squash NZ Chairman selects a recipient of this trophy, which rewards a significant contribution to squash in the previous year. In 2011, sports journalist, squash enthusiast and author of Long and Short: The Story of NZ Squash Joseph Romanos was selected as the worthy recipient. Jospeh trawled the country, interviewing hundreds of squashies throughout New Zealand to capture the incredible history of sport in what everyone agrees is a fabulous pictorial story of squash in NZ. Joseph was also a founding member of the NZ Squash Hall of Fame and every year works with his fellow Committee members to select inductees to celebrate. Joseph was given his award at the Hall of Fame ceremony on Friday night at Remuera Rackets Club and the interviewer was then interviewed by fellow Hall of Fame Committee Member Grant Smith.

Squash New Zealand would like to congratulate all recipients of the award and also thank those people who took the time to nominate all worthy recipients.

Megans Winning Ways23/11/2011
From the Marlorough Express - By Clay Wilson
After notching her first professional tournament win in Australia over the weekend, Canterbury/Marlborough squash star Megan Craig is hungry for more success.

In just her fifth Wispa (Womens International Squash Players Association) tournament, the 18-year-old produced an outstanding string of victories to win the Caboolture Open in Queensland which finished on Sunday.

Seeded 10th, she beat the sixth, first and fourth seeds on her way to the final, before downing second seed Australian Maggy Marshall in four games in the final.

Making the world No123s victory even more impressive was the fact all four players she defeated were ranked inside the worlds top 100, the lowest being her first opponent at 93.

Craig, who arrived back in Blenheim on Monday afternoon, said although she had to work hard for all four wins, the quarterfinal victory over top seed and world No60 Sarah Cardwell was the most pleasing. The young Marlburian was staring defeat in the eye at 0-2 and 2-8 down in the third game, but clawed her way back into the contest before eventually triumphing 2-11 9-11 11-4 11-9 11-9.

"It was probably the biggest game of my life. I dont think Ive ever felt like being sick after a game, but I did after that. It felt like that was my final."

She then had to play both the semifinal and the final on Sunday, knocking over Australian junior No1 Tamika Saxby, before beating Marshall to lift the title.

Although it had always been a goal to win her first Wispa tournament, Craig said her desire to do so had risen significantly in the last year. She said the Kiwi women who competed in the Australian tournaments were almost always given a tough draw, making the victory even more satisfying. Her first professional win had also made her hungrier to continue climbing the world rankings, something she felt would require a couple of key things.

With a lack of real competition in Blenheim and the new national coach being based in Auckland, a move north is on the cards. After a break for a few weeks she is planning to make the move in the new year to begin preparing for her first Wispa tournament in 2012, the Australia Day Challenge in Brisbane on January 19.

Adding new elements to her game would also be crucial.

"I can run all day, but I probably need to work more on my attacking and finishing ... instead of them doing all the attacking it needs to be me going for more shots."

The updated Wispa world rankings are released on December 1 and she said she "cant wait until the first of month" to see how high she will rise. A move inside the top 100 ranked players is likely and with a plan to compete in 15 Wispa tournaments next year she hopes to continue her charge towards the top of the world game.

CBHS Squash wins Zonta Award28/10/2011
By Geoff Ellis
THIRD TIME A WINNER
After previous years as a finalist and also being awarded a Highly Commended in 2009,  Andrew Ellis led his Christchurch Boys High team to receive the award as Top Boys Junior Team at the highly prestigious Canterbury Zonta Awards yesterday evening. With just under 400 people in attendance and 22 high schools represented at the Addington Raceway,  it was a wonderful way to recognise this achievement. There were many extremely talented sports people as nominees so to even be a finalist was an honour in its own right.

This is the third year in a row that the school has won the National Secondary Schools Squash title. For Andrew Ellis and Jacob Turnbull it is the end of an era with their top school team, that goes back five years. For all School verses School games it is 63 wins and 3 losses.  For the first three years as part of a six-man team they formed a bond with well known players Edward Dromgool and Paul Coll. In the first year they finished 4th then 2nd before taking the title in 2009 against Auckland Grammar. This was the first time in 25 years that the School had ever won the trophy and only the third time it had ever been awarded to a South Island School. Winter Interclub Finals Results25/10/2011
By Piet Van Hasselt - UPDATED, Full Results
The end to a long winter squash season produced plenty of close match-ups and exciting twists at the Interclub Round 2 Finals this week.  The Hoon Hay Mens Division one side led the charge for their club taking out the top mens prize on offer last night over Christchurch in a thriller, 11-8.  Captain Ben Scott captained got Hoon Hay off to a fast 3-0 start over Gary Roberts.  The Post family got Christchurch back into contention with Jonty defeating Nathan Chappell, 3-1, and Ed coming back for the win over Cam Wilson, 3-2.  This set-up a titanic last match between Hoon Hays Tate Wilson and Christchurchs Mike Allred.  Tate prevailed in five-sets played in a white-hot atmosphere.  The ladies division one trophy was won by Nicky Dunlops Burnside after Hoon Hay was unable to field a team.

Thanks to Squashways and Christchurch for hosting finals on Monday and Burnside and Football for hosting Tuesdays finals.

Special thanks to Ian Gardiner and his crew of referees who helped in almost three-quarters of the finals despite the new format of playing on Monday and Tuesday nights and more games on concurrently.

TROPHY AND PRIZE PRESENTATIONS: Please be advised that trophies for each grade winner will be presented at the official Squash Canterbury Awards Night on Thursday 3 November at Robbies Elmwood doors open 6.30pm, with presentations 7-9pm, cost $5 for nibbles.  Please make sure you have a team member on hand.

Squash Foundation Dinner Writeup20/10/2011

The Canterbury Squash Foundation held it’s inaugural dinner recently at the Chateau on the Park Hotel in Christchurch.  The foundation was formed with several aims in mind, notably to celebrate the history of squash in Canterbury, maintain and increase squash networks, and provide financial support to worthy squash causes. For this event, the cause was to support those squash clubs affected by the Canterbury earthquakes. The support required will be ongoing because some Christchurch clubs are still not open, eight months after the devastating February earthquake.

The dinner was a great success with more than 90 people attending. Joseph Romanos, author of Long or Short? The story of New Zealand Squash’, was the MC. He spoke about aspects of the book and in particular focused on Canterbury’s pivotal role in the early development of New Zealand squash. Then he interviewed a number of squash legends from the Canterbury region, and a future player to watch out for. Joseph interviewed Megan Craig, recent winner of the national junior title and already ranked the 15th among the world’s juniors. Barry Gardiner, Sarah Cook and Rod Hayes were also interviewed. All have had very successful squash careers - Barry has twice won world masters squash titles, Sarah was once a world junior championship finalist and won three New Zealand senior titles, and Rod represented New Zealand in 1976 and 1983. Joseph did a great job: the interviews were funny, serious and informative all at the same time.

There were some notable attendees, including 1976 Olympic hockey gold medalist Selwyn Maister, and another very successful New Zealand hockey player and coach, Pat Barwick. It was also great to see Aucklander Don Cotter support the event. Don is the chairman of the New Zealand Squash Hall of Fame. He, Robin Clements and Lindsay Walton all traveled down from Auckland to attend. The Hall of Fame has also donated a further 26 copies of the history book Long or Short’ to the Canterbury Squash Foundation to raise future funds.

The event raised more than $11000 and donations were until very recently still coming in from squash clubs around the country. Those clubs and squash associations that made donations were: North Shore, Oamaru, Ohakea, SquashGym Palmerston North, Queenstown, Lugton Park, Kawaroa Park, Squash NZ, Squash Canterbury, Gore, Mercury Bay, Malvern and the World Women’s Teams Championships.

The event was also well supported by the business community both within Christchurch and further afield. The following businesses made donations to the event: Mondo Travel, Chateau on the Park, Pegasus Bay Winery, Russley Golf Club, Terrace Downs Golf Resort, Ed Post & Associates and GSA Design Palmerston North.

Thanks also to Tim McGoldrick from Harcourts for offering his expert services as auctioneer on the night.

All donations from the squash and business community are gratefully accepted, and the total raised will go a long way to helping out those clubs most affected by the earthquakes.

Megan wins U19 Title11/10/2011
Megan Craig has continued her dominance of the junior scene taking out the NZ National Junior U19 title without dropping a set.  Theo Zbijowski had a great showing in the boys U17 grade making the final after beating A grader James Cooper in the semis, but was defeated by the number one seed Zac Millar in the final.  Ruby Turnbull and Emma Cormack also performed well finishing third and fourth respectively in the girls U13 grade.  Interestingly all of the number one seeded players won their respective grades.

Megan Craig, the 18-year-old from Marlborough/Canterbury who is the number 15 ranked junior in the world and just outside the top 120 in professional senior rankings had a relatively straight forward victory in her final as she put away Manawatus Danielle Fourie, a world junior team mate in straight games. Fourie has a junior ranking of 29. Earlier Craig defeated Waikatos Jorja Tarrant in the semifinal also in straight games.

The teams event kicks off today with the boys seeded 4th and the girls seeded 6th.  The boys will be playing without number one Andrew Ellis who had to withdraw due to injury.

NZ beat Australia in Masters4/10/2011
By Wayne Seebeck in Nelson
The roof of the Nelson squash club was raised off its foundations when NZ defeated Australia  in the trans tasman series  for the first time since 2000.  In fact it was only the fourth time that NZ has won since the competition began in 1984.
With NZ winning the first test 9/3 Australia was on the back foot in the second test played last night at the Nelson squash rackets club.  The galleries were filled to watch the first match NZ Kathryn McKay 45+ put NZ on a winning streak by repeating her win over Sue Williams of Australia, while on court 2 the first match was the mens 60+ with Tony Naughton repeating his sucess beating Michael Mcdonald 3/0.
35+ Corey Love NZ was dominant again to defeat Australia"s Troy Northey 3/0, once again showing the perfect range of drops and boasts.  Again it was NZ on top in the 50 + women with Kaye Newman  repeating her success in the 50 + women.
Australias first win of the evening was in the 40+ women with Sonia Pinter getting her revenge over Lisa Cowlard Nz  3/1 .
NZ Gary Duberly in the 45+ beat Dale Robbins 3/2 a very long closely fought match , just taking it out 3/2 in the end..
At this stage  New Zealand looking strong with 5 matches to Australia`s one.  Now Australia edged back in the 60+ women reversing last night result with Kathy paterson defeating Francy Stevenson 3/2 in  a hard fought match with every point fiercely contested.
NZ now 5 Aust 2.  Then came a classic battle in the 50+ with NZ Mark Waldin finally after a long hard fought battle with  Waldin having match point in the 4th set McClarty made a strong come back to level the score at two all.  In the 5th game the spectators were thrilled with the see saw back and forth when finally Waldin took the match 3/2.   NZ 6 Aus /2 .
NZ now only needed to win one more match to win the series.  Scott Gardiner of NZ 40+ could not manage to repeat his win of the previous night over Warren Millar of Australia.  Now NZ 6 Australia  3
Freda Walker 55+ wasn’t able to overcome Anne Richards Australia who  played superbly to win 3/1. NZ 6 Australia 4
Next on court is Mickayla Kerr 35+who was impressive in repeating her last nights win over Michelle May 3/0
NZ Needed one more win to clinch the series. Mickayla`s win sealed the  win for NewZealand.
At this stage the result is clear.  Nz have over come the mighty green and gold,  The final match of the night was the 55+ men with Kevin Smuts NZ winning 3/0.   The final result of the night was 8/4.  New Zealand Test series winners 2/0.
NZ v Australia Masters Test Series29/09/2011

After a sterling start with a warm welcome from the Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio where he declared this day a Aussy Hug day, and hugs were exchanged, and the national anthem was beautifully sang buy Local girl Dominique Donaghy , the games began in earnest.

After a many years of competition, New Zealand are finally in front after the first round by 8 to 4.  The night began with a resounding lost, with Freda Walker going down to a inform Anne Richard 3/0 from Australia, and Australian Malcolm McClaity beating NZ Mark Waldrin 3/2.  However the tables were to turn with the  2 stars of the night were Corey Love and Mickayla Kerr from Wellington repesenting the NZ 35 age group have resounding wins that gave the New Zealand team a much needed boost.

Cory Love played Troy Northey from Australia and after winning a very even first set the supremley confident Kiwi showed he was a class above his opponent when he turned on a string of beautifully drifting boasts and deftly placed drop shots to leave his opponent bemused and stranded, taking the last 2 sets confortably. Ex Marlborough Player MicKayla Kerr kept the home crowd entertained when defeating Michell May 3/2 making the most of what appeared to be a nervous start from May.  However May recovered to take 2 games and then a huge batttle in the 3rd with Kerr going down 14/16.  But Kerr upped the pressure and took the next two games.

Lisa Cowlard NZ won 3/0 and kept her Aussie opponent Sonia Pinter under pressure the whole match.

Outstanding Australian players were Anne Richards who totally donaminated Walker taking out the game 3/0 and 45+ age group Dale Robbins showed calm, experience and control to overcome highly ranked NZer Gary Duberly 3/1.  Duberly was on fire initally, taking the first game with some wonderful boasts.  Robbins slowly took contol in the second and with great anticipation never loooked back. NZer Kay Newman ousted Mandy Hamilton 3/0 . Firing on all cylinders, hitting the ball at pace and took the first game comfortably, 15/5. Hamilton took the rally lead in the 2nd game but Newman came back from 5-9 down to win 15/11.  Newman dominated the back hand and made few errors close battle in the 3rd with Newman being the victor.

Final results of the first round were New Zealand 9 Austalia 3.  A new day tomorrow will see the Australian out to turn the tables.  Games begin 5.30 pm at the Nelson courts.  Public are welcome to come and support their teams.

SNZ 2011 Hall of Fame Inductees22/09/2011

Don Cotter (NZS Hall of Fame Chairman) has announced the following four squash identities as the 2011 inductees into the Hall of Fame.

Norm Coe
The left-handed Norm Coe was one of New Zealand’s leading squash players through the 1950s and early 1960s. He was runner-up in the New Zealand championship in three consecutive years, 1955-57. However, his biggest contribution to squash was as a coach. Not only did he coach any number of leading players, ranging from Neven Barbour and Trevor Colyer to Joanne Williams and Philippa Beams, but he coached the New Zealand men’s team in four world championships through the 1970s and in the following decade played nearly as big a role coaching national women’s teams.

Ann Stephens
For 15 years Ann Stephens (nee Mackenzie) was the leading New Zealand women’s player. Playing an athletic, robust game she won five New Zealand titles in from 1956-63 and represented New Zealand from 1960-68. She was part of Mitchell Cup-winning teams with Oamaru and Hamilton. Her record would have been even more impressive but for the fact that she divided her time between squash and badminton, at which she was also a New Zealand champion. In 1957 she played in both sports’ national championships on the same weekend.

Pam Davis
One of New Zealand’s most accomplished women’s players, she won a national junior title and then, as Pam Buckingham and later Pam Guy won five national senior titles and a New Zealand Open crown. She represented New Zealand with distinction from 1968-79. The 1970s was a time of strength for New Zealand women’s squash, but no-one rose as high in that era as Pam. Her trademarks were her fitness, strength and power and she had a fiercely competitive temperament that helped her to win many close matches.

Paul Steel
Hailing from Whakatane, Steel was an only reasonable junior who blossomed once he reached the senior ranks. Physically imposing on the court, he prepared thoroughly, kept himself superbly fit and cut his errors to a minimum, which enabled him to pull through in several important long matches. Steel won the national title in 10 successive years, from 1992-2001, a feat unprecedented among men. He represented New Zealand with pride from 1991-2002 and attained a world ranking as high as No 15.

The induction dinner will take place at Remuera Rackets on Friday November 25th at 7.00pm.
For tickets please contact Don on 09 365 2147 or 021 850 045.

Winter Interclub Rd 2 Semi/Grand Finals19/09/2011
Please find above the Playoff Format for each division for your information.  Despite the quakes and snow we have been able to the maintain similar semi final formats for most of the grades.  Thanks for your co-operation of going later than usual in these extenuating circumstances.

This year finals are being held on the nights that you play interclub on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 October.  This was recommended at a Presidents meeting last year, so we are delighted to make this change from the usual weekend timeframe where some players were unavailable.   Four clubs are hosting games over the two nights (two venues night) see the draw as games have been scheduled already.  These clubs were chosen because they can host four courts and a final nights atmosphere can be created.  Fixtures were chosen at random and all finals are considered neutral games. A poster for the finals days will be circulated soon.

Semi finals will be held at the home of higher ranked team where possible some round robin have already been allocated at courts for the semi weeks, so this may not always be possible unfortunately.

If your team is unable to field a team due to players being away for Canterbury representative playing duties, Squash Canterbury encourages both teams to discuss an alternate date to be played the week that the semi final is scheduled at a suitable venue organised by the teams. We trust teams will be co-operative with this.

Best wishes for the last few weeks of your round robin games.

Tawa Squash Sponsors Squashways Open in ChCh15/09/2011

By Paul Growcott, Squashways

After the February earthquake in Christchurch, the Tawa Squash Club got together and thought they needed to do something to support the squash players in Christchurch region. They decided that a trivia night dressed in red and black would be the only way to go. The night was a great success raising $1000, which the club wanted to use to sponsor a tournament in Christchurch. Squashways decided to hold an open tournament last weekend in conjunction with the Canterbury Squash Foundation dinner hosted Joseph Romanos at the Chateau on the Park which was also fundraiser for Squash clubs affected by the earthquakes.

Steve Baker Tawa Squash President who attended both events said he was proud of the Tawa squash club for their achievements raising the money especially after touring around the city seeing all the devastation.

Earthquake Fundraiser Update7/09/2011

From Ed Post, Canterbury Squash Foundation

I have good news and bad news!

The bad news is that Stu Davenport has had to pull out for work reasons, he has had to make a hasty trip to China. This is somewhat disappointing to hear with only a few days to go! No doubt Stu had very good reasons ,otherwise he wouldnt have done it. My apologies to all of you attending.

However we still have a great line-up of local squash legends who Joseph Romanos will interview and that will be heaps of fun in itself.

The good news is that I have just successfully Skyped Joelle King on site at the Chateau on the Park , on the big screen, just to make sure the technology worked! She is in Montreal right now, and will be in New York when we interview her. And the technology did work which is great. Joelle is really looking forward to the interview, which she will be doing at 6am New York time. She said she is so jet-lagged at the moment that getting up at 6am will be like having a sleep in!

We will have an area set aside on the night to display squash memorabilia. For now we think itd best for all of you to bring your own memorabilia on the night to share. Its always good to go down memory lane , even to see old interclub results from years back. Rod Hayes has a few of those Im sure he would rather not remember! So bring along anything of interest, and Ill make sure we get photos!

Also there are some great auction items that weve lined up.

See you all on the night!

Craig comes from 13th seed to final5/09/2011

NZ Junior and Canterbury/Blenheim product Megan Craig had an outstanding weekend at the North Coast Open at Coff’s Harbour in Australia. Seeded 13th, Craig battled through to the final and narrowly lost 2-3 to Hong Kong’s Liu Tsz-Ling (6/11 7/11 11/9 11/4 7/11, 42mins) after beating Hong Kong’s Carmen Lee 3-2 in the semi-final, beating top seed Melody Francis (Australia) in the quarter-finals, defeating Australia’s Maggy Marshall in a very fast Round 2 match (21 mins) and knocking off Moana Gray (AUS) in an equally fast Round 1 match (11/3 11/7 11/8, 22min).

Superb Earthquake Fundrasier this Saturday5/09/2011
From Ed Post - Canterbury Squash Foundation
Our earthquake fundraiser is on this coming weekend, on the 10th September.  So last chance this week to get your ticket.  For those of you already coming, and if you dont yet have a ticket , youll need to get one from one of the trustees , either me, Lawrence Skurr, David Hawes, Murray Withers or Doug Lawrie before Saturday, and you will need to have paid by then as well.

In addition to those interviews with our local squash legends, Joseph Romanos will also interview Stu Davenport , ex World No 3 , and all going well with the technology on the night , we hope to interview Joelle King , live from New York at the very end of the dinner. Joelle will be in New York preparing for the USA Squash Open.

So it will be a fun night, and Im sure there will be a few good stories told, and as well we will all feel good knowing that by attending we will be helping out those squash clubs damaged in the earthquakes.

New Zealand has beaten Korea 3/0 in the 17/32 play off pool at the World Team Championships in Germany.  In the lower play-off ties, New Zealand rediscovered their winning ways by beating Korea 3/0. But the experienced Kiwis, seeded 15, were fully stretched by the fledgling nation making only their second appearance in the event.  New Zealander Martin Knight, ranked 48 in the world, twice had to recover from fight backs from Seung Taek Lee before beating the unranked Korean 11-4, 8-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-0.  "We knew we were going to be tested - all three players were good, even though we didn’t know much about them," said Paul Hornsby, the new NZ national coach. "Their racket skills were good and they moved well - we had to play tidy squash to beat them."

NZ in 17-32nd playoffs24/08/2011

New Zealand has missed out on the top 16 playoffs at the squash World Teams Championships at Paderborn, Germany after falling to defending champs and second seeds Egypt in final round robin play. Egypt used a team featuring the world No3, No9 and No13 ranked players and were able to dominate the Kiwi team winning 3-0. However 19-year-old Paul Coll from the West Coast now has the experience of playing an opponent of the calibre of No13 Hisham Mohd Ashour. The Egyptian beat Coll 11-9 115 11-4 in 25 minutes, while Wellington’s Evan Williams was defeated in straight games by Mohamed El Shorbagy the ninth ranked player in straight games.  Kiwi No1 Martin Knight ranked at 46 in the world lost to No3 ranked Karim Darwish 11-4 12-10 11-5 in 37 minutes.  As a result of Hong Kong beating Sweden in the same pool as the New Zealand team the Kiwis miss out on the top 16 playoffs and will now face South Korea for positions 17-32.

CBHS Threepeat16/08/2011
Christchurch Boys’ High School continued to dominate New Zealand Secondary Schools Squash by winning the National title for the third time in a row which was held over the weekend in Auckland. Recent Old Boys Paul Coll and Liam Kennedy were there to cheer the team home to a 3-2 victory over Tauranga Boys High School in the final. Coach John Brown said all the hard work that had been put in prior to the event had paid off especially in the final. For Andrew Ellis and Jacob Turnbull it has been three successful National titles. It is also the end of a twenty year era for Gavin Bird teacher in charge of squash at the School, winning three National titles in a row is a great way to finish. Squash Canterbury would like to thank him for all his efforts. The B team must also be congratulated for finishing a creditable eighth out of the 36 teams. Once again Lynda Fahey skills were to the fore in support and help for both teams. Andrew Ellis and Chris van der Salm were selected for the New Zealand Tournament team.

Joseph Romanos Evening - 10 September9/08/2011
PROMOTIONAL POSTER

From Ed Post, Canterbury Squash Foundation

After all the turmoil weve had this year, its time to have some fun, and in doing that, help those squash clubs most affected by the earthquakes.  The Canterbury Squash Foundation is pleased to announce that the Joseph Romanos evening is now on the 10th September ( exactly nine months after we first proposed this on 10th December last year! ). The promotional poster is attached. We look forward to as many squashies as possible , currently playing or not , attending this event.

Joseph will be the Master of Ceremonies for the night , and will interview a number of ex top international and national squash players featured in his book   Long or Short ? The story of New Zealand Squash .

The main attraction will feature an interview with ex World No 3, Stu Davenport, and of course there will be some local personalities interviewed on the night.  Joseph is an author of 40 books on sport, and is a great interviewer of sports people. Joseph always gets the most out of the people he interviews, he will be sure to make it a great fun night!

So lets get together on the 10th September, have some fun, tell a few old squash stories, and help get those squash clubs worst affected by the earthquakes back up and running.

I would appreciate it if Club Presidents can forward this email on to their members, it would be great if each club can at least commit to getting 1 table of ten together for the night.  Details on how to get your ticket is on the poster.

Look forward to seeing you all there!

Interclub postponed Tue 26 July26/07/2011
Please be advised that due to the continued extreme snow/ice weather conditions Interclub has been postponed for Tuesdays 26 July.  There is projected to be more icy conditions tonight which is hazardous given the late finish of the interclub competition.  We again apologise for any inconvenience caused.  Stay warm and safe everyone.

NOTE: This week’s games (25/26 July) will be moved to the end of the round.  This is 19/20 September for most grades, unless you are in a grade with six teams or Div 1 men, which started a week later.  All round robin games will be played before the semis in all cases.  This will push the grand finals round out to 10/11 October.  The juniors draw remains unchanged as it fits within the school term.  I am making the changes to the draw online this afternoon.
Craig goes down fighting25/07/2011
Megan Craig’s great run at the Women’s World Junior Squash Championships has come to an end.

Whitlock, seeded 5/8, won 11/4, 11/6, 12/14, 11/6 in 46 minutes.
Interclub postponed Mon 25 July25/07/2011
Due to the extreme snow conditions overnight, Interclub has been postponed for Monday 25 July.  The state of the roads and late finishes for Interclub means that conditions will be dangerous.  Apologies for any inconvenience.  The season will run another week later for the grades that are affected.

Hopefully things will improve and we can get games underway for tomorrow night.

Coll named in Senior NZ Team11/07/2011

Canterbury squash teenager Paul Coll’s rapid rise in New Zealand squash circles continued over the weekend with the Greymouth product named to the NZ Senior Men’s Team.  Coll will join his team-mates for the World Men’s Team Championships in Paderborn, Germany at the end of August.

Coll is the first man from Canterbury to make the NZ team since George Crosby a decade ago.

Coll, 19, was excited and delighted with the selection which was announced last night at the NZ Nationals in Hamilton.  Other players named to the team include Commonwealth Games silver medallist Martin Knight, Campbell Grayson and Evan Williams.

Coll finished fifth in the individuals in a field full of the countries top players.

He has been very active playing in a string of Australian events this year and following the national teams event concluding tomorrow, he returns across the ditch to play in three PSA tournaments before the worlds.

Highlights for Paul this year include reaching the semi finals at the ACT Open in Canberra and the quarters of other another Australian event.

Coll attended the squash hot-bed of Christchurch Boys High School and this year is up in Auckland studying the first of two years of an Architecture Diploma at Unitec.

He graduated from the junior ranks after helming NZ to a sixth placing, their best finish since 1992, at the World Junior Teams Championships last year in Ecuador last year.

Craig 5th, Teams Underway11/07/2011
Canterbury/Blenheim teenager Megan Craig continued her great form finishing fifth in the individuals at the NZ Nationals.  She defeated rivals Emma Millar and Amanda Landers-Murphy in her last two games.  Craig, 18, is heading off to Boston next later this week to head the NZ Junior womens squash team at the World Junior Championships.

TEAMS EVENT
Canterbury are seeded 4th in the mens and 5th in the ladies draws at the NZ Nationals Teams Event in Hamilton.  The girls are playing in a round robin of five teams, and the men have two pools of three teams, with a crossover match following pool play.  Unfortunately for the men, Tate Matson was a late withdrawal due to illness.  The teams event finishes Tuesday.
Knight/King take out NZ Nationals11/07/2011

World squash No14 Joelle King (Waikato) was able to almost play the perfect game as she won the New Zealand nationals defending her title by defeating world No17, Jaclyn Hawkes from Auckland.   Twenty-two-year-old King beat her friend and close rival Hawkes, aged 28, with surprising ease 11-9 11-2 11-5 in the final and was a little surprised herself with the scoreline at the Hamilton Squash and Tennis Club which also celebrated its 75th anniversary.

"I thought I was going to be a lot closer. I played quite well and didn’t let her have a snap at it. It’s quite nice to beat someone that close in the world rankings in straight games said King, the doubles gold and mixed doubles silver medallist at last year’s Commonwealth Games in Delhi. "I’ve been home for the past two months and it’s quite nice to see the things I’ve been working on put into match play and come off," said King who now plays strong tournaments in Malaysia and Singapore and is targeting the world top 10 rankings.

Earlier King had accounted for Waikato player, Kylie Lindsey in straight games in the semifinals, while Hawkes beat Tamsyn Leevey of Wellington, also in straight games in what was a solid field for both the men’s and the women’s tournaments for a national championships featuring a large number of internationally ranked players. The best of the women’s world junior team members who depart for the junior world championships in the United States in just over a week was Megan Craig from Canterbury/Marlborough who reached the quarterfinals before falling to Leevey in five games.

Meanwhile in the men’s final Martin Knight (North Shore) the world No47 ranked player scored a straight games win over 57th ranked Campbell Grayson (Herne Bay) 11-6 11-7 11-8, a repeat of the result from last weekend in the Central Open.
Knight won through to the final with a straight games win over Wellington’s Evan Williams and Grayson had to battle a little more to overcome Kashif Shuja in four games.  Grassroots Trust New Zealand Squash Open, Hamilton Squash Club, results:

Women’s singles quarterfinals:
Joelle King (Waikato) bt Lisa Cowlard (Auckland) 11-6 11-0 11-1; Kylie Lindsey (Waikato) bt Amanda Landers Murphy (BOP) 11-9 12-10 3-11 11-8; Tamsyn Leevey (Wellington) bt Megan Craig (Marlborough/Canterbury) 11-7 6-11 9-11 11-7 11-1; Jaclyn Hawkes (Auckland) beat Emma Millar (Waikato) 11-5 11-4 11-9.

Interclub 27/28 June Postponed24/06/2011

Dear Club Presidents and Team Contacts

Please be advised that for safety reasons due to the earthquake on Monday 13 June, we have decided to postpone next weeks Interclub (Monday & Tuesday 27/28 June) for all venues.  Please pass this onto your team members.

We are still waiting on many inspection reports from various clubs from engineers (acceptable via email/phone from an engineer direct to Squash Canterbury).  Due to this many of the courts are still not playable.  Safety of our players is of prime concern to everyone at Squash Canterbury, especially those visiting other clubs.

Sumner has indicated they will be out of action for the end of this round and the next, and Mt. Pleasant could be in the same position definitely out in the short term.

Could clubs please ensure that we receive reports or communication that the venue is safe from an engineer by Friday 1 July, noon.  We will not schedule games for Round 2 until this information has been gathered.

All things going well, this means that the Interclub draw for 13/14 June on 4/5 July, and the original draw for 20/21 June on 11/12 July.  I will email all of you once the plan is further clarified.  This would push out the start of Round 2 for the week following (no bye week between rounds) and the finals days would go to September 26/27.

Please alert me of any issues around clubs and damage etc.

Squash HQ and the Squash Canterbury Offices have just received the green sticker following an inspection and clearance to re-open from the council.

We have been accepting team entries for Round 2, and are presently tidying them up.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.  We hope you and your families are safe.

SI Quad Canty Team Named15/06/2011

By Piet Van Hasselt

Squash Canterbury is happy to announce the Canterbury team to contest the Quadrangular Tournament in Oamaru, June 17-19.  This tournament features a unique mixture of master, senior and junior players and will take on Southland, Otago and Midlands over the weekend.

Wayne Seebeck and Marliesje Carrick will manage the team.  Thanks to the convenors Lynda Fahey (juniors), Fred Williams (seniors) and Wayne Seebeck (masters) and fellow selectors for their work in assembling the teams.

Interclub 20/21 June Postponed15/06/2011

Unfortunately due to the Monday 13 June earthquakes and its effects the Squash Canterbury board met last night and are postponing ALL Interclub games on 20/21 June.  This is to give all clubs time to make assesments and time for accurate draws to be completed if more courts are unavailable for an extended period of time.  Squash HQ, Lincoln and Mt Pleasant are currently out of action waiting on building inspections and Sumner has suffered more damage and is also awaiting an inspection.  Also a number of other clubs are waiting to get the go-ahead before re-opening.  We are looking at finishing off the remaining two weeks of Round 1 and then extending Round 2 out to compensate.  Safety of our players is of prime concern to everyone at Squash Canterbury.

We thank you for your patience as its trying times for everyone in Christchurch.  The Monday 6.3 earthquake was a major event and we hope you and your families are okay.  Please stay tuned for future updates.
Masters Interclub Postponed, Thu 14 June15/06/2011

Please be advised that Masters Interclub Squash for Thursday 16 June has been postponed due to the earthquake and its effects.  We will play the games at a future date when there are no games to catch-up.  On a brighter note, Richmond are putting together a team so that we wont have a bye, so there will be a new draw coming - bye team will have a game etc.

Tuesday Interclub Postponed; HQ Closed14/06/2011

Dear Club Contacts

Please be advised that for safety reasons due to the 5.5 and 6.0 aftershocks yesterday afternoon, we have decided to also postpone tonights Interclub (Tuesday 14 June) for all venues.  Please pass this onto your team members.  Many of our clubs are getting inspections done over the next couple of days.

All things going well, the plan is to play this weeks Interclub draw (13/14 June) at the same venues next week (20/21 June), and the following original weeks draw (20/21 June) on the week after (27/28 June).  I will email all of you once the plan is know.

Please alert me of any issues around clubs and damage etc.

Squash HQ and the Squash Canterbury Offices are closed until further notice a council inspection needs to be completed just like the September and February ones before the building can be cleared.  For urgent matters please call Piet on 0275337348.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.  We hope you and your families are safe.

Regards

Piet

It is with deep sadness to inform the Squash community that Bill Berry passed away at Darfield hospital surrounded by family on Wednesday, 1st June, aged 82, after a courageous battle with cancer.

On the behalf of the Squash community I want to convey to Bev and family, our sincere condolences on the passing of very special and caring man, one of a kind

Over the 25 years I knew Bill, he was always helping or assisting someone including myself to further their life skills, either on or off the squash court.

Bill will be missed by the Squash Community throughout New Zealand especially the Darfield area.

Messages for Bill may be left in his tribute book www.tributes.co.nz or posted to the Berry Family, C\- PO Box 31300, Christchurch 8444.

In lieu of flowers donations to Darfield Hospital would be appreciated and may be made at the service.

The funeral service to celebrate Bills life will be held in the Darfield Recreation Centre, North Terrace, Darfield on Saturday, June 4, at 1.30 pm.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP PRESENTED

During the moving service which was attended by hundreds in Darfield on Saturday, Bill Berrrys wife Bev was presented with a plaque for Bills life membership to Squash Canterbury for his long and outstanding service to squash in the region.

Tony Harrison made the presentation on behalf of the Squash Canterbury board and its member clubs.

The board was able to present this due to the overwhelming support by the Canterbury clubs who unanimously backed the life membership nomination put forward by Burnside and Malvern squash clubs.  This was in the process of being noted at a special general meeting, but earlier on in the week was ratified by the clubs votes of support.

Canty Senior Team Announced7/06/2011

By Piet Van Hasselt

Canterbury has announced their squad to contest the Senior Nationals in Hamilton, July 8-12.  The squad features nine of the 10 players that went away last year.  Professional teenagers Paul Coll and Megan Craig headline the squads and will look to finish even higher than their impressive fifth placings last year in the individuals.

Joining Paul on the squad are team-mates from the successful 2009 NZ Junior championship teams event side, Ed Dromgool and Andrew Ellis who are now strong A2 players.  Grant Craig will be the teams most experienced player and always brings plenty of determination and guts every time hes out on the court.  Tate Matson is a former NZ Junior squad training member and is the only newcomer to the squads.  He represents Hoon Hay as an A2 graded player and is down here to study for University from the Northland region.  Tim Preston has been named at the non travelling reserve after returning to work in Christchurch from Palmerston North for at least this year with the Earthquake recovery.  Tim has been playing interclub with the Christchurch Squash Club.

Playing alongside Megan is an unchanged line-up featuring Jutta Tuunanen who took out the South Island/Linwood Championship last week and was the 2010 Senior Canterbury Player of the Year award winner.  Shayle Higginson will once again represent the red and blacks and will play an important role on the team.  Shayle is a Richmond club stalwart who are currently displaced following the earthquake and has been playing with a combined Richmond/Christchurch entry for Interclub.  Erin Dippie from Greymouth returns again to the team and finished third with a couple of good wins to finish the South Island Open over the weekend.  Katrina Palmer rounds out the side after taking a short break from the game over the summer and is on the cusp of an A2 grading.

Returning to manage the squad is the experienced duo of Lynda Fahey and the coach is Mike Allred who are both currently away in Malaysia working with the Christchurch Boys High School and NZ Junior Teams respectively.

Squash Canterbury thanks senior convenor Fred Williams and his fellow selectors Lawrence Skurr (men), Mary Turnbull (ladies) and Mike Allred (men and ladies) for their time and wishes the team the best for their build-up and the tournament itself.

Men: Paul Coll (Greymouth/Squashways), Grant Craig (Blenheim/Squashways), Ed Dromgool, Andrew Ellis (Burnside) and Tate Matson (Hoon Hay).  Non traveling reserve: Tim Preston (Christchurch)

Ladies: Megan Craig (Blenheim/Christchurch), Erin Dippie (Greymouth), Shayle Higginson (Richmond), Katrina Palmer (Hoon Hay) and Jutta Tuunanen (Football)

Coach: Mike Allred

Interclub Rd 2 Entries due 20 June19/05/2011

Please be advised we are now taking online entries for Round 2 of the Winter Interclub via the usual Squash IT Platform.  Entries close off on Monday 20 June.

If you have any weeks where you cant host games in Round 2, please let me know as soon as possible.

Thanks for your co-operation in these trying circumstances and we can all look forward to the business end of the season.

ROBBIES Winter Interclub Round 2: 9 Weeks + 3 Week Playoffs
4/5 July to 19/20 Sept

Entries Due 20 June via Squash IT Platform

Finals on Mon/Tue format at venues to be selected.

As per Round 1 and Earthquake Meeting Agreements:

That all clubs work together for the greater good of the game, to keep people playing and particularly help out the displaced clubs by hosting their interclub matches for no charge.

All club courts would be utilised with neutral venues hosting displaced and other teams.

Round 1 didnt see a lot of major changes to the draws from previous years, but there may be an increase in Round 2 teams.  Squash Canterbury will attempt to minimise the impact, but the clubs and organisers understand that we are in extraordinary circumstances this season.

Early spots at out of town venues would try and be avoided for town teams.  But may need to be used in extenuating circumstances.

Where possible it is hopeful we can have the Div 1 grades block-booked at courts going around the venues for Round 2 again.  This depends on the entries received and draw eventualities.

Winter Interclub 2011 Fees (all including GST)

Senior Grades = $140 per team for two rounds or $80 one round.

Juniors = $90 per team for two rounds or $50 one round

Masters = $80 per team for one round

NOTE: Invoices for Round 1 are being sent out now.  As noted earlier these will reflect a 50% reduction in fees from Summer Round 2 as half the games were cancelled due to the earthquake.

The mens grade features nine teams from seven clubs and has a points cap in place to spread the eleven A graders around.  Teams operate under a points cap of 13600 for each interclub night based on the points at the cut-off date.  A number of former A graders have come back to play this year so the number ones for each squad are very strong.  Burnside is the defending First Round Wilson Trophy and CSRA Cup Round 2 Winners.

The ladies grade has five teams from four clubs and due to earthquake circumstances teams will have three players each night.  Christchurch are the defending Kathy Hargreaves Shield champions.  Many familiar faces return headlined by Megan Craig, Jutta Tuunanen, Shayle Higginson and Katrina Palmer from the 2010 Canterbury senior team.

The earthquake displaced Richmond club are represented in both grades which is a tribute to the clubs hard work.

This year the games are being held at a one venue each week where possible to allow other squashies the chance to come down and watch Canterburys top mens and ladies players in action.

DIV 1 LADIES UPDATE

Due to the unavailability of many players at Football, Christchurch, Hoon Hay clubs and other top players, teams will consist of 3 players for this round only.  Many clubs indicated that they didnt have suitable next tier players available to call up, so this was mooted after a discussion and approved by Squash Canty.  I believe this was tried in the past.  The points cap will be delayed for this round.  However Squash Canterbury holds the final say on team entries as to try and create an even competition where practicable.  We will re-assess in time for round 2 and hopefully be back to normal.  Thanks for your patience.

DIV 1 MEN POINTS CAP

Please note the rules on the points cap.  The most important thing to note when formulating the teams is that that team must be under the points cap on each particular playing night.   The top 4 primary players must be noted.  I will be in touch once I get all Div 1 entries in to confirm your primary players and ensure you are under the cap.  Reserves can be players with higher points, but can only play a maximum of 3 times for the round.  Points will be taken on April 18 and emailed to team captains which will be basis of points used for all players for the entirety of round 1 (ie. they wont be adjusted for points cap purposes each week).  You are able to utilise players from other clubs provided you meet all other criteria for teams.  Please see the rules for full information and contact me if you need clarifications.
