Canterbury U23s & Masters Open 2017

Jackson Beresford and Ruby Turnbull Claim Canterbury U23s Titles.

The U23s displayed some stunning final’s match with all three Men’s divisions going to five games. It was a fantastic showdown between Jackson Beresford of Christchurch Squash Club going against Jayden Millard of Christchurch Football Squash Club. The last time these two met was during the Christchurch Tri-Series #2 in which Jayden had the upper hand. However, things were a little different this time. The first game was point for point resulting in an exhausting 16-14 win to Jackson. With Jackson then taking the second game, Jayden fought back strongly to 2-2, but Jackson stayed focused and won the final game 11-6. In the other men’s division finals, Matthias Paltridge took the tight and tense match to five and came out top at the end against Jake Bremner, while Charles Allen came through in the gruelling 5-game match against Todd Ryley. The Under 23 Women’s was another battle between Ruby Turnbull and Ruby Beresford, each of whom sailed through to the finals without dropping games. Turnbull began strongly and continued throughout the balance of the match winning comfortably 3-0. In the U23s Women’s Division 2 Final, Abbey Barron came up on top against Nadia Karati in a 4-game match.

Men's 1 Masters Final - Scott & Jason_opt

The first game of the Master’s Men’s Division 1 Final saw some great movement around the court between Scott Gardiner and Jason Oxenham. Gardiner had controlled the centre of the court well and took the first game 11-8.

The second game was tightly contested between the two Master’s men, however it was Gardiner who came on top at the end of the second 12-10. Oxenham took one back at the third (11-7) with some splendid display of squash by taking control of the court. However, it was too much for Oxenham as Gardiner neatly took back control and claimed the match in the fourth (11-6). The other Master’s Men’s finals saw Barrie Matthews, Tony Johnston and Rodney Wilcock claimed their matches swiftly in their respective divisions. In the Master’s Women’s Division’s 1 and 2, Karen Walton displayed great control of the court and confidently claimed the match in three against Judith Smith. Helen Benington finished her final match after beating Kate Russell 3-0.
