Marlborough won the annual Rai Shield and Rooster Trophy against Nelson Bays.

Marlborough was too strong for Nelson Bays when annual Rai Shield and Russ Rhodes Rooster Trophy junior squash competitions were held at Club Waimea 23rd September.

Marlborough won both the Russ Rhodes Rooster Trophy in the J-grade event after winning 12 of the 16 matches on the day. Strong performances came from the J grade boys’ team of Bryn Woolley, Charlie Wilkins, Dom Henry and Ryan Gillman with all four taking 2 wins each.  The girls team also did their part, with wins to Carly Craig and Jasmine Wirepa.  Younger sister Lucy Wirepa gained valuable experience and is expected to contend again next year.

In the Rai Shield open grade, the Marlborough players showed their strength with the team winning 10-6.  The boy’s team of Paul Moran, Tom Marshall, Chris Hebberd and Ricky Wirepa won both ties, without dropping a match.  Sophie Whittall and Mackenzie Woolley lost in the girl’s team, but the pendulum swung in Marlborough’s favor with 2 wins to NZ Secondary Schools and Canterbury Representative Amelia Wadsworth.

Squash Marlborough has run weekly junior squad training and monthly J grade tournaments for new and developing players throughout the winter to support growing the numbers and strength of junior squash in Marlborough.
